I have used file wipe tool to wipe free disk space, but I was able to recover all deleted files.

You used some wipe free space utility to wipe all previously deleted files and then you was able to recover them all. This is a typical example of using wrong wipe utility or using wipe utility in a wrong way.

  • Using wrong wipe utility. Itís simple. Wiping free space means overwriting all the bit of information on your local hard disk. It cannot be performed in 3 minutes for 30 GB hard disk.

  • Using wipe utility in a wrong way. In some case you may fail to wipe files because of some protection utility installed on your computer. Before wiping you should remove/close all protections, for instance Norton's tools.

Using some undelete/recovery programs make it possible to recover files even after a full free-space wipe. Norton Utilities' Recycle Bin Protection is one example. Basically the undelete/recovery tool is designed to do the exact opposite of what a data wiper is designed to do, so you might not want to use both at the same time.

That is why you must empty the Recycle Bin and flush any protected files before performing a free-space or slack-space wipe if you want to use a wiper without first disabling the anti-delete.

Iím using encryption and I donít want to use free space wipe

So much hassle! Iím using encrypted file systems and ramdisk as opposed to trying to wipe free space.

Itís a good idea to use both means for security. You can use some mean to encrypt you files and some mean to prevent recovering any temporary files that were created when you opened encrypted MS-Word document.
